Pitcher Plant And Wild Orchid Centre

The Pitcher Plant and Wild Orchid Centre is situated in Kota Sentosa (10th Mile Bazaar). You can find up to 30 plus subspecies of pitcher plants and various type of wild orchids from Malaysia and our neighbouring countries. There are also staghorn ferns and Bird's nest on display. Opening hours:- Tuesday to Sunday (including public holidays). Entrance fees are RM1(Malaysian adults) and 50cents for children. Tourists need to pay RM2.

I went to do some studies of the pitcher plants and took these photos. This research is for the coming art exhibition, Sarawak Nepenthes Summit which will be from 17 till 19 August 2007 at Sarawak Tourism Complex.

Cat Building in Cat City

Whenever I see this building which is opposite Wisma Saberkas, I can imagine a face of a cat(or a tiger). Its only last year that I saw a "Cat Tree" which is opposite Petanak Market. Is it just me or are there really some hidden images of cats in Kuching?

I saw this banner hanging behind a shop somewhere behind "The Junk" restaurant. So I took a photo & check out the website. Its actually Ruaidayak Gallery Cafe & Tribal Restaurant. I hardly see any "tribal" restaurant in town so this one is quite special. Its not only a restaurant but on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th floor, there is a B & B budget hotel with 56 rooms for backpackers. They have free internet broadband access. They even arrange tours for tourists. They serve western food and traditional food such as BBQ of chicken wing and pork, 'Pansuh Manuk, Pansuh Ikan & Pansuh Babi'(Chicken, Fish or Pork, cooked in bamboo) etc. Anybody who's been there can give us some reviews. St Thomas Play

I went to a play at St Thomas school on 15 June 2007 by the students. The title of the play is "Death of a Longhouse". Its a fundraising programme for the school. The show started off with a Gawai celebration at the longhouse. The dancing and performance is good and I feel like I'm watching a performance at the Sarawak Cultural Village. These students started practising for the play since 2006 and I think their effort had paid off.

The story is about the son of the longhouse chief going to Australia to further his studies and not returning. That is how the longhouse "died" without a new generation to take over. I had not been very attentive throughout the show. If you want to know more about the story, you can ask the main actor himself (in yellow shirt).

Chef at Home

Due to popular requests from my own blog, I'm writing a short review for this wonderful homey restaurant. First of all, my apologies for the shaky photos. I was reaaalllly hungry. :D

This garden restaurant has thrived from an obscure dining place to a packed house every weekend as it serves excellent food at cheap prices. Word of mouth sure beats million-dollar-advertisements eh?
It caters mostly for those who prefer Western food as you can find lamb shank, dory fish fillet, chicken chop and many others on the menu. If your mother insists on going elsewhere because she wants to eat rice, they have rice with fish/chicken on the menu too. :)
My personal favourites has got to be their Linguine Carbonara (approx. RM12) and Ice-Blended Mango (approx. RM6). A few times, I even wake up in the morning craving for their Carbonara. See... they're THAT good. I love that dish compared to elsewhere as the pasta is just nicely cooked, not overdone or undercooked (as if oft the case with other places) and the sauce is... creamy and gooey and cheesey and it doesn't taste like puke. Well admit it, some cheese sauce tastes like puke.Chef At Home is located near Hui Sing roundabout, opposite Petronas. The parking space is quite limited. You can enter their designated parking lot by going in the first lorong on the right from Hui Sing roundabout to Seng Goon Garden and the, erm... lorong after the first double-storey house you see on the right. Confused? I suck at giving directions. Anyway, to avoid the hassle, you can just park at the roadside near the bus stop opposite Petronas. Heheh. Have a great weekend!

A Walk in the Park

Alright, the silence in this place is getting on my nerves !! And I am now having so much time so I am thinking maybe I should write something to break the uncomfortable silence. So yeah, now just imagine very hard that Robin is still in Kuching, and blogging from Kuching !! Just imagine.

My old secondary school was none other than St Thomas, and just adjacent to this majestic all boys school on the hill (which was actually the first school in Borneo) there is this really cool and nice park, called Reservoir Park. I still remember those old Physical Education Classes when our teacher would force us down to the park and asked us to jog for a few rounds. It was actually a horrible thing and by the time we got back to our class we were all sweating like pigs !! How can you expect us to continue the rest of our studies in such conditions? Sheesssshh....

Anyway, this reservoir park is a public park, and you can find people of all ages, from babies in prams to uncles and apeks in their late years all over the place during the peak hours, which would usually be early evening, 5-6pm. I do not know why this place is such a popular place, but come to think of it, we do not have that many options, since Kuching is not exactly filled with gardens and parks. For fitness and jogging purposes, I take that Reservoir would be the most suitable choice for those living not too far away.

Long long time ago I believe that people use to Kayak in the lake. I think now it is prohibited for kayaking activities, since I do not see any kayaks floating recently. There was one point when I was in my late secondary years that the waters got into such horrendeous condition, with very stagnant water and foul stench that I wonder how anyone can survive jogging even halfway around the lake !! It was air pollution literally with something decomposing in the waters. Thank goodness the entire park underwent a full on renovation and restoration not long after that, and now it has become the much loved and visited park again.

During my brief visit there one evening, for the first time in my many years in Kuching I spotted wild monkeys roaming around freely in the park. I know the monkeys live on the trees nearby, just that I have never seen them so close on the grounds before. Maybe after the full renovation the park has become a much friendlier place to be, even for non-human inhabitants.

There you go, one of the famous parks in Kuching. It is famous for the boys and girls to meet up ~~and make out~~, a place for apeks to walk aimlessly staring at young girls, a place for serious fitness obsessed freaks to run rounds and rounds non-stop, and also the place for an ordinary boy like me to just have a plain walk to find peace for the much troubled mind at times.

Book Castle

I was hanging out with my bestie (I have 2 besties :D) at Tun Jugah, browsing through the fiction section at Popular Bookstore. I was undecided on buying either The Undomestic Goddess at RM32.90 or The Givenchy Code at RM34.90. So there I was holding both books in hand with what must be a dubious expression on my face for my friend grabbed hold of my arm and said, "You want cheap, second hand books? Let's get out of here." Somewhere along that line lah. :P

Book Castle is situated along Jalan Keretapi, just after the cross junction from the Sarawak General Hospital (Don't take my word for it, I'm really, REALLY bad at giving directions).

It has been operating since last year but today was my first time there. The moment I entered the shop, I was greeted by this heady smell of old books, although not totally unpleasant. The first 30 minutes was a total blur. I can only remember scanning line by line of old books, hoping to stumble upon some interesting titles.

I have to admit, 40% of the books must have been published before the 80s but if you are to go there, it's advisable for you to just keep on looking thoroughly as the books are not arranged according to the year (should you be more interested in the more contemporary ones, say those of the 90s), although they were arranged alphabetically.

It is not only novels they sell but also reference books including Computing, Law, Medicine, Language and backdated collection of Readers' Digest stories. The Computing books might be a little outdated for your tastes but then again, you'll never know what trinkets you might find among the floor to ceiling shelves so do check out this place every so often. The prices range from RM3 to RM16. I didn't check out the heavier readings but the maximum price shouldn't be more than RM25. They also have this promotion whereby if you buy 2 books, you get one FREE!

As for myself, I bought two books, Maya Angelou's 'The Heart of A Woman' (RM10) and an English Language reference book, 'Learning English Through Literature' (RM8) with the grand total of less than RM20! I was really glad that I didn't pick up the book at Popular earlier.

Kuching by the Day and Night

Currently there are only two operational Cinemas in Kuching, namely the Riverside Cineplex, and the more preferred Star Cineplex. Star Cineplex is situated at the 9th floor of the Medan Pelita building, built primarily accomodating carparks for most of the levels. From the top of the building, you can get decent view over the Kuching CBD from a distance, and it actually covers a wide view of Kuching from other angles as well. For a not so frequent movie goer like me, I sure make use of my time up there, taking pictures of the lovely city of Kuching, be it day, or night.

It was a scary experience taking those shots, using long time exposure (slow shutter speed) by placing my camera on the extended pillar outside of the corridor. Since I did not bring back my tripod, placing my camera on that conveniently only available steady surface seemed tempting enough, but it did not fall short of another risk. The risk of having my camera falling down 9 stories to the ground, should I make any silly movement and be as clumsy as a clown. Thank goodness, none of those happened.

I shall be leaving Kuching soon, and thus, I am taking as many pictures of this lovely city as I can. This explains my frequent updates on this catcity blog.

Once I am outstation, the only thing closest to home, would be viewing those pictures I have taken and reflecting on those wonderful times I have had in this remarkable hometown that had given so much to me and my life. Kuching is such a liveable city that, once you leave, you will be sure to feel heavy-hearted.

Tua Pek Kong Temple

Hey everyone !!! How was the Chap Goh Meh celebration? Since it was the last day of Chinese New Year Celebration, the temples are flocked with people, especially the one popularly known Tua Pek Kong Temple in Kuching. The temple is one of the oldest, and yet still standing, right at the heart of Kuching, situated adjacent to other prominent landmarks as well, namely the Chinese Museum, Sarawak River Waterfront, and the Main Bazaar. Until today, the temple is still crowded with people on seasons and festivities, and remain a remarkable tourist attraction.

I had a privillege to tag along Allen on a photography journey after my Chap Goh Meh dinner to Tua Pek Kong. When we got there, the temple was already swarmed with people. While Allen was doing his stuff, I was doing my stuff too. Plenty of pictures were taken, and I had quite a difficult time steadying my hands since I left my tripod back in Perth (bad decision). Nevertheless, I did manage to get some satisfactory shots, though the pictures taken by Allen's DSLR would be much superior. Anyway, nothing much can be expected from a budget consumer camera for night photography.

There were other people with normal cameras as well as DSLRs around too, hence our presence there happily snapping away was not that awkward after all. And I noticed that people taking pictures with family in front of the temple is a casual thing to do, since nowadays even mobile phones come with good quality cameras. Of course, I did not camwhore, it just felt a little off to camwhore in a religious place, would you not agree?

For those of you visiting Kuching, do look out for the Tua Pek Kong Temple. It is quite easy to spot, especially if you are driving along the waterfront. It is actually at such a strategic location that if you are walking around the area, you will have plenty of places to explore from there on.

Sarawak Belacan Bee Hoon

Who says Sarawak food is only known for its Kolok Mee and Laksa only? Our selection of local delicacies does not stop just there, it actually spans into a much wider variety, that many outsiders but Kuching folks only would truly know what is best, and where to find it. One of my friends brought his other friends from West Malaysia around Kuching, and while everything else fails to please and amaze the foreigners’ taste buds, my friend switched to one rare option: Belacan Bee Hoon.

Belacan Bee Hoon is considered as one popular dish, though not as commonly found everywhere as Kolok Mee and Sarawak Laksa. Since people who has very little experience with the taste and “interesting” aroma of belacan (a type of prawn paste, used for cooking or sauce) may find the belacan bee hoon rather unattractive from the first glance, this dish would usually serve to be a last resort. Nevertheless, just like durian, some people may distaste the foul smell, but some, would instantaneously develop a life-long addiction and craving for it. This happens for those friends from West Malaysia.

SARAWAK BELACAN BEE HOON

Usually Belacan Bee Hoon is primarily plain bee hoon served with Belacan Sauce, Cuttlefish and Cucumber. You have an option to add extra chilli, or even extra belacan into the bee hoon itself, should the taste be insufficient for your liking.

SONG KHENG HAI MARKET

The best place to get good Belacan Bee Hoon in Kuching would be Song Kheng Hai Market, at Padungan. There are two equally famous stalls selling Belacan Bee Hoon there, and those stalls only operate from 2.30pm-5.30pm every afternoon. During my last visit there, which was at the 7th day of Chinese New Year, so many other stalls along that row was still closed, and only the TWO Belacan Bee Hoon stalls were open. Look at the picture itself, with just those two primary stalls, the entire place was jammed packed !! Imagine what happens when all stalls are open on ordinary days.

At Song Kheng Hai market, There are plenty of other dishes to choose from besides belacan bee hoon, or to go along with it as side dishes. I would usually opted for Chat Kueh, which unfortunately was not open that day. We had Rojak to fill in the gaps, and washed all those scrumptious food down with, ice cold ABC Special.

For all those folks out there who has never tried this special Sarawakian dish, I suggest that you try it out the next time you stop here, after all, you wont find this elsewhere. There is no promise that everyone will love it, but if so many people are lining up the stall filling up the orders, I am taking that it is a very well liked dish locally. You will never know until you try it out yourself, like those friends from West Malaysia, they fell in love with Belacan Bee Hoon ever since their first encounter.

Side Note: It is getting a little quiet here lately, hence I guess I should make some noise. Come on guys, we should update this place more often. Anyway, a round of belacan bee hoon before I leave to Australia, anyone?

Bloggers Meet @ Oregano

It was a much anticipated event of the week, and the highlight that most of us Kuching Bloggers looked forward to. We were expecting a turn-up of roughly 20-30 people for this particular meet, and the number of people who made it was in the range of prediction: 26 people (bloggers + a few non-bloggers). Personally, I was kind of hoping the number of people to reach over 30, or maybe 40, and that would have made the event seemingly somewhat more significant and outstanding. Nevertheless, 20-30 was what we planned for, and should we have more people coming in we would have problems having enough seats for everyone. As important as the number can be for a gathering of any sorts, comfort must be ensured and prioritized for everyone.

The Place: OREGANO, TRAVILLION

The meet was at Oregano, Travillion, the place any Kuching folks should know or at least heard of it before. We had reservations made on the outside of the café, having the outdoor feel for the bloggers meet, creating a much soothing and inviting atmosphere, especially at night. ~~and thank God it did not RAIN~~ There was also another drawback for the choice of venue, since it was outdoor, it was really dark, and photography (aka camwhoring) must be made with flash. Nonetheless, there were not that many places in Kuching that can house more than 20-30 people all at once, outweighing the disadvantages, Oregano appears to be the most appropriate.

Kuching Bloggers In Blur Motion

How was the meet? There was an interesting mixture of fresh new faces as well as old familiar ones who have repeatedly appeared in previous bloggers meets. When I arrived at the venue ~~ok ok, I was late, kekekekeke~~ I was a little disappointed when I noticed the arrangement of the table, which was lined up in a singular line, combined into a long, long table. Undoubtedly, people who sat at one end have little if no contact at all with those sitting at the other end. Communication was rather difficult, not to mention moving around could be quite annoying since many have comfortably settled in their seats. This was totally unexpected in a way, and I have to admit I did not talk to everyone present at the meet. Nevertheless, I tried my best to reach out and get to know the people there, particularly the new faces that I have not met before. I do hope that no one felt singled out or feeling awkward in any sense. This was a social meet, hence you will have to socialize!!

As for me, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I always love to meet new people, and even better, getting to know those that I have known even better. I have met people from all walks of like through this and previous bloggers meet: teachers, radio DJ, kayaker, newspaper reporter, graphics designer, IT experts, engineers, and many, many more. Having a peep into each and everyone’s lives, and how they feel and think about their lives, is certainly priceless. We not only learn from our own journey, but also by watching and observing the journeys of others. There is much to share from my own part, and there is even much more to be gained from the others who are willing to share their experience and knowledge. Of course, the network that has been established, and the uncountable numbers of laughter and smiles just added to the joy and meaning of meeting many other bloggers in Kuching.

For the organizers, you guys have done a great job, and totally deserve the credits. Organizing a huge public event is never an easy thing, and this has been quite a success. For those bloggers who came to the meet, and those who could not make it but supported us anyway, I sincerely give you all my gratitude. You know what? You guys RAWK !!

Gong Xi Fa Cai

Before you know it, it's already the second day of the year of the golden pig. Feng Shui masters said it's an auspicious year to spend your money like you don't need it (particularly those born in the year of the rooster, like me... YES! I'm so gonna get that Chloe bag) and it's also a great year to have babies! ;)

I haven't celebrated CNY in Kuching for the last 6 years as I've been away at uni so I really enjoyed myself this year watching the enormous fire crackers in the sky. Played a bit ourselves too so it's all good. I'm just wondering... how much money did Kuchingites burn for this year's CNY? One household in my area must have spent about 10k just for CNY eve alone. They played non-stop since after dinner till way past midnite. Let us all hope prosperity will come their way this year indeed.

Taking photographs of fireworks is the most frustrating job in the world. Particularly when you don't have a good camera. My Canon cam is crap. My phone cam is crap. My photo taking skill is crap too. But surprisingly some of the photos turn out good... A good start to an auspicious year!

I don't know about where you live but where I'm at (Seng Goon Garden), the fireworks have begun. Not just the measly 'eeeee pop' ones mind you, but the 'eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee POP KEDEBANG BOOM BANG BANG BANG' type you always witness on TV.

I'll usually be sitting in front of the comp when they start playing. I'll rush to the window to watch the beautiful display and EVERY TIME, will forget to take pics! Gah. Well actually I *did* remember one time, but by the time I rushed to my room to get the cam and went back outside, the fireworks have died down. I would love to see pics of fireworks and anything CNY in Kuching so do mail us the pics. We'll be waiting to hear from you! Oh by the way, why is the 3rd Exchange so freaking happening suddenly?

Anyway, just an idea... I pass by the new flyover near the airport every day after work and notice that the foreign workers always sit in a row overlooking the cars that pass by underneath the flyover (the cars pass by underneath, not the workers). Such a great shot for any willing photographers. Anybody who wants to start the first photoshoot session around Kuching? We can start at the flyover, before they finish the construction which will be pretty soon judging from the looks of it.

RWMF 2007

The official site for this year is up! *click* And guess what? My favouritest world music band is coming to Kuching again for RWMF 2007! 'Shannon' from Poland was here for RWMF 2005 and they're coming back! The Celtic band looks like Guns n Roses in kilts; long hair, headbanging and all. How they sound like? Well, explaining in one meagre post won't even come close to doing the real thing justice.

Bagpipes, whistles and rocker dudes in kilts? You never thought that could go in the same sentence did you? A definite top-of-your-list of things you must see and hear before you die. Period.

Sunday Market

Every town or city has a Sunday Market and Kuching is no exception. It is the best place to get anything local at cheap prices and caters to every whims and fancies of even the most discerning tourists. What do I mean 'anything'? Well, goods sold range from biscuits sold in bulk to plants to pets and even jewelleries! The only things not sold here are cars or houses. And that my friends, is pretty close to the truth. ;)

I went to the Sunday Market last weekend much to my mother's surprise coz I rarely want to go out with my parents. To the market I mean. It was a sunny day and I just got new batteries for my cam so I was raring to go and snap some pictures. Most still turned out pretty crappy though. Heh.

Char-kuey. Good to eat on its own or dunk in hot coffee. Or Bak Kut Teh. Hehe. The taste? Something like fluffy cream puffs, without cream.

Sarawak is also famous for Kek Lapis (layered cake) but I don't think anyone in the world would have expected such beautiful creations as these!

Kolo Mee

Kolo Mee is something you can find it everywhere in Kuching!!! Of course, not in the toilet. Those in the toilet are already being processed. Well this is a food entry, so I'll stop talking bout toilet hehe.

A bowl of Kolo Mee usually cost about RM2.00-RM2.50 for a normal one. Btw, Kolo Mee is NOT a halal food, because it contains pork. However, you can get Halal Kolo Mee in Kuching too, usually from Malay Cafeteria.

There's curly noodles, handmade noodles, straight noodles, flat noodles etc...u can choose whichever type of noodles u want.

Beside Kolo Mee, there's other delicious food in Kuching too. So, what are u waiting for? Come to Kuching today!!!

Rainy Days in Kuching

It had been raining almost everyday since the end of year 2006 until today in Kuching. We are quite lucky that we did not encounter massive flood like the one in JB. However, I really miss the sunny days we had.

We see dark clouds filling up the sky....it's gonna rain again. Seems like our clothes need few more days to be dry.... The construction works in Kuching were delayed by such weather too.

The traffic sucks when it's raining. And we know that the roads in Kuching are very "well built" indeed...I feel like driving a speedboat on the road.....See what we get in return for paying tax....

Oh well, during this rainy days....it's best to to have a hot and spicy Sarawak Laksa to keep your stomach warm... or problay indulge youself with a cup of warm beverage, sitting on a comfortable sofa...

Hope the rainy days will go away soon...

This is my first post up on this blog. It's really a priviledge to be blogging about Kuching. For most of us Kuching kia, Kuching has been our home and we're proud to be a Kuching-ite. Since this is just the beginning of this blog and as Aileen has highlighted, we welcome you Kuching bloggers to be part of it. Come join an all Kuching bloggers' community! We're trying to add more authors amongst our circle so this site can be updated periodically, or you can also publish the same post as the one in your blog. Just as long it has something about Kuching :D

Contact us at the email add displayed on the sidebar for more info or just give us a shoutout at the chatbox or drop us a comment if you want to be added as an author. One of the criterion to be a contributor is that you must be Kuching born or grew up here for at least a part of your life. You must also be a blogger of course, because what's the point of adding you to be a contributor if you won't actually contribute right?

Apart from that, this site is undergoing... urm... renovations... so you'll be able to see a better layout soon (or at least when we actually have time to do it)! We hope to see more of you soon!

RWMF Reminder

RWMF or Rainforest World Music Fest will be held on the 13th-15th July 2007 in Kuching, Sarawak. This year will mark their 10th anniversary and tons of spectacular performances have been promised. A recent check on their official website shows that there are no signs of the 2007 events yet. However, quite a number of travel agencies have taken to putting up special packages for the event on their website already. They are certainly not going to miss out on any chances due to the massive crowd who comes for the event every year. Most of the hotels, both in the city and at the RWMF venue, will be fully booked by as early as next month so make your reservations quick!

Personally, I love the service provided by the travel agency we went for last year, Borneo Mainland Tours, as their service was efficient and their employees are really friendly people! From pre-RWMF event days (flight schedule, payment) leading up to the shuttle service (from Kuching International Airport to hotel of your choice, in my case, Santubong Resort) to the check-out process, everything was handled professionally with a touch of friendliness. They even returned to the resort to return my friend's hat which was left in their shuttle van even though they were already in the city on the first day. Hows that for quality service?

The package we took was very cheap compared to others. It was RM1000 per room for 2 pax, which means RM500 per pax really. That RM500 is inclusive of 4 days and 3 nights stay at Santubong Resort with breakfast x3, 3 days event pass (RM60 x3), complimentary (don't you just love when they use this word when they could have just easily use the word 'free'?) one way airport transfer and a few ~~free~~ complimentary hotel shuttle to event venue coupons.

The room we stayed in was humongous. It could have easily fit in 15 people, no joke. You *can* do that, provided the 13 others buy their own RWMF tickets. Now... you didn't hear that from me. ;)

Things that has just been added are a chat box, a counter, the gmail signature and of course, the catcity button. The site is still very messy and I overlooked the fact that the blog add and gmail aren't the same. The blog add is http://catcityblog.blogspot.com whereas the gmail add is catcityblogs [at] gmail [dot] com. Being a perfectionist, yes that one 's' is absolutely killing me!
(**Edit: I've change the email add to the catcityblog [at] gmail [dot] com. :D)

Ivan and leenmafia (which is just me really) has just been added to the growing (soon!) list of authors. Perhaps I'll start posting something tomorrow. Perhaps... :D

Anyway it's been raining here every day and a clothes dryer is, without a doubt, the best thing ever invented since bread. Well it's almost midnight and I better get some forty winks. Good night Kuching!
